Haven't made it for a long time. Lots of work, but usually worth it.

Best stuff in the world, but it's been a long time.

Made a gallon of mixed berry two days ago. Much better than store bought. Just ate some of it half an hour ago. We have an electric 6qt. White Mountain freezer. I let it churn about 20 minutes. If it freezes too fast it'll be less creamy.

mmmmmm-good.

The home units don't seem to make smooth creamy ice cream just better tasting ...I will take better tasting over smooth any day. Made some pear ice cream ... try to find that in the market.

I know what you mean by the pear ice cream, you can,t get it or any of the many flavors you can do at home.I think one of my favorites is stawberry-rhubarb.After the kidos go to bed don,t make to bad a cocktail with rum either!:thumbsup:Dave

It's been just about a year now since I made any. I made several freezers of fresh peach and 3 or 4 of chocolate last year. The fresh peach is my favorite.

I think I,ll keep making my ice cream and the grand kids can eat at DQ at home! They just don,t know what good is,in fact the little dickens prefer quite a few things from the store over home made?Boxed mac & cheese tastes like wall paper paste to me no way as good as home made, but they prefer the box.Go figure:confused:Dave

We use to make it one or two times a year. Get the ice and the salt and the mess.

Now we have homemade ice cream once a every week or two. My wife found this table top freezer that you don't have to use the salt. You keep the canister in the freezer. when you are ready to make ice cream you take it out of the freezer, put the paddle in it, put the canister in the table top unit and plug it up. Makes enough for three people to have 2-3 bowls each. Fresh homemade ice cream when ever we want it. It is a very nice and easy way to make it.:licking:

Dave, tell your grandkids that they are eating air. All the soft-serve ice creams have loads of air in them from being whipped.

My grandmother used to make ice cream in a bowl. She'd put the ice cream in the freezer and take it out every few minutes and stir it. As it began to freeze, it would go from liquid to ice/liquid and finally all ice cream. It was a lot less smooth than ice cream made with a home ice cream maker with a dasher. (My mother called the paddles a "dasher.") I can tell you that her boysenberry and strawberry ice creams were two of my favorites.

I also have a story about the old hand-crank ice cream makers. When I was about 8, we were making ice cream and I thought the water coming out the drain hole was being wasted. I put my finger over the hole so the salt water couldn't run out. My mom didn't catch me soon enough and the salt water got up and into the ice cream. About the top 1/4 of the ice cream was salty. Guess who got to eat that part?:p:thumbdown:

We use to make home made ice cream when we lived in Wa. State. Picked strawberrys from bell farm off west beach road in Coupeville. Still have the machine somewhere? Use to hand crank as a kid. Last Balikbayan box we sent to the Philippines had a ice cream maker in it, wifes sisters can now make and sell ice cream at the Sari - Sari store outside their home.

You are right Dave...I never have understood how anyone could actually eat Spagetti O's or Chef Boyardee anything...just to name two items that taste just awful to me but kids seem to love them...???:)

Would like to try the new compressor type ice cream maker - might make it more often if don't have to do the ice/salt deal. Have made a lot with the electric 5 qt model in the wooden barrel type, just about every flavor we could dream up, but banana seems to be the favorite, then banana-pineapple, then peach, then the rest.
