Hey Guys,
I finally got her done and have been off to the races!
6 horse, winch driven, hands free "post hole digging
heaven." All for under $300.00, and most of that
the engine. What do you think?

That is pretty interesting!

Not sure what to say. Hummm...guess that is sayin' something!

I'm not usually tongue-tied! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I see opportunity for a gear box between the engine and auger gearbox...forward/reverse...get the auger stuck...just reverse it and screw it out... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Also maybe future weights could be added on the side opposite the engine to give balance and more down pressure when needed?

Horizontal stabilizers like a backhoe uses?

How does it work? I think we need some action shots! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

While I don't have reverse, I do have the winch. I
restrung it to give me down force, as well as lift. When
it gets in a bind, I throw the engine to idle and hit the
winch and it pulls itself loose. Stabilizer legs would be
a nice addition though.

Is that what the little pully at the bottom, near the tip of the auger is? I was wondering about that... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

With my luck the auger tip would catch it and... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I take it the auger is attached directly to the gear box shaft and is held steady and doesn't swing when turning, right? Already know the answer...otherwise it would be too risky to use...

You engineering types always continue to amaze me. That is one awesome rig there. I would want stabilizers, since my pucker point is alot less than some.........I get dizzy on a merry go round.........

In the auctions I attend I can tell you that thing would bring around a grand at least. You did yourself proud. I would say you deserve a new toy (work enhancement attachment), but you can probably build it better anyway.

One last thing, can you paint it orange, and use it on an ORANGE tractor.............. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Great job!

Cotton I really like your PHD design, I used to check out a book in community college library when i attended called 600 More Things to Make for the Farm. It had some designed like yours and a few trailed types. The only thing i d do different on yours is use a hydraulic motor for the augers drive. Thats just because im not very good with engines. Ive biult a few augers for friend posthole diggers with old cotton picker and combine augers that have been beefed up and a heavy pipe core in the center. Is that how your auger is or is it a factory bit.

I honestly don't know. It was given to me by a dear friend
who had it laying around. It doesn't have any sleeve in it.
I think it is a homemade auger because the pipe appears to
be galvinized, while the blades are not.

Hey Henro,

To be honest, the auger is rather loose on the gearbox. It
has been my experience that a tight fitting auger can cause
as many problems as a loose one. My rig has a centrifical
clutch, so at idle it doesn't turn. I run the unit down until
the tip is in the dirt where I want it, and then shower down
on the throttle and "Get ya Sum!!!!"

I like it ,simple, functional and you didn't have to mortgage the farm to build it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
