I would agree training is a must anytime one deals with firearms responsibly. From the news accounts i thought this perp was a friend of the son and was most likely allowed in the house as any friend would be. I have alarm system that is set when i am not at home or at nite after bedtime, also dog that is very alert. The alarm makes a chime when any door/window is opened even when not activated. I am former LEO with Concealed Carry. I carry everytime i leave the house, even if on the tractor down in pasture. When in the house, a handgun is always in easy reach. I have no children to deal with, but when they are visiting, the weapon goes back into my belt, not the safe.
