I've bought a bunch of them from scotties, and some from ace.
I'd have to see the specs on your solenoid. In many cases, the voltages listed are 'max' relays and solenoids will usually pull in at 2/3 of max votlage, and will not release at less than half the coil votlage ... obviously there will be some exceptions. I have operated the 24v units on 18v via 2 9v batteries. Me and some friends made soem paintball cannons for a local field using a piece of 6" pvc with a cap on one end, and a reducer cap ont he other end.. dropped to 1" or 3/4" and then screwed in a sprinkler dump valve and then added a short piece of pipe on the other end as a barell. stuff a small wad of tissue down barell.. put in 6 paintballs, and then add another wad of tissue. Run wirs from dump valve to a radioshack project box that had a on/off toggle (safety ) switch and then a momentary pushbutton switch, 2 9v batteries in series, and a red led with correct resistor to run off 18v. Turn off/on toggle to on, and red led lit indicating 'armed' push the momentary button and the paintball cannon 'fired'. We used them to simulate rpg's ont he paintball field for use in assulting bases.. etc.
I seem to remember using a 12vdc power supply to trigger a sprinkler system at my house.. but for all I know.. those may have been 12v dump valves..e tc..
