LD1,
Everything you state is correct.
You are assuming:
1.-- that everyone inquiring has a chain on their saw and can correctly follow the process quoted. How does a casual user determine gauge without the proper tool??
Stated in my previous post. It is usually stamped right on thebar
2.--that the user is located near a supply house that can provide the proper chain I made no such assumption. I am just giving the 3 peices information required to properly size a chain.
3.--that it is worth the effort or just make a phone call had have it delivered
I live in a rural area and recently when through the process--drove the 30 miles to town. Saw shop was closed and the big box stores and hardware stores didn't stock the chain. Next option was to drive 200 miles round trip to the big city of Albuquerque. That chain would have cost me 5 hours of driving and $70 in fuel---go figure...
Call Amazon and have 2 chains delivered for $34.00
You however are assuming:
1. That the bar is 18", but it could be a 16" or a 14" or a 20". Only the OP can answer that.
2. That the bar has never been changed and that the origional .050 guage bar is still on the saw.
3. That the op lives in a rural area with no saw shops around.
I aso live in a rural area. We have pleanty of saw shops around. Most have 250' rolls of chain of all types and sizes and will assemble the correct length on the spot. And it is usually cheaper (at least in my case) than buying online. The place I usually go is a stihl dealer and he charges me $0.90 per inch of bar for sthil chain (which is regarded as the best). That would make 2 18" chains run $32.40 plus tax. I would rather do that, have better quality chain, and keep the business local.
An back to the main topic, I was trying to point out that you DONT need part numbers. If you know the # of DL's, guage, and pitch, then ANY chain that matches those 3 will fit your saw.
I have SEVERAL saws, I have never used a chain part #. I wouldn't even be able to tell you part #'s of the chains on my saws now. But I can tell you the pitch, DL count, and guage of all of them.
But to each his own. If you want to order/buy chain with part #'s, so be it. There is more than one way to skin a cat.
