homemade air compressor

I have also wanted to build a VW compressor for sandblasting. I have an engine and a transaxle sitting in the shop just waiting. Anybody know anything about them? Anybody have a kit for sale?

RonRock, Look on my first post for the link, they sell them.

I bought for my truck an "On Board Air" system that uses a AC compressor. I have not installed it yet. The company that sell them now calls it "Air Boss". Here's a link: Kilby. It runs at about 2000 RPM for 150 PSI, but I don't remember the CFM. I am putting it on a Dodge Cummins with a 5 gallon tank and air fitting for a portable job site compressor. Just small jobs like air nailing.

Thanks, I'm familiar with them. That is why I have the VW engine. Just looking for a cheaper kit. Maybe someone that has one they won't use. Or someone that has built one and could tell me how well it works. Any info other than what I can find on their website. Thanks, Ron

4800psi compression from a Ford engine ????? or are you talking about 2 different compressors ?? MikeD74T

They took the head off the compressor side and bolted on their own cylinders and made a four stage compressor. They also bolted the compressor pistons on top of the Ford piston.

You can use any a/c compressor that has an oil sump. Such as the "york" style in the prev post and the chrysler RV-2. You can not use any of the rotory compressors (r-4, r-6, nippondenso, hitachi, etc) since they ONLY get lubed with refrigerant flow (refrigerant carries the oil).

Now if you do use an A/C compressor be aware that it will allow oil into the air line and you must keep checking oil.

A belt driven truck air compressor would work fine. Not all are crank driven. However most don't have their own oil supply, they rely on engine oil, so you will need to figure a way to pressure feed oil to it and provide a drain.

what would be slick to rig up a version like the comercial units.

A V8 that is re-cammed to run one bank as an inline 4 and the other bank is a 4 cylinder compressor. so bank one drives bank 2 via the crankshaft.

no need for couplers etc.

I once used an old York style AC compressor on my Ford 6.9. I made a bracket for the compressor and mounted it close to the alternator, I believe. I welded a second pulley on the alt pulley and used the AC's electric clutch. Wired through a pressure switch and a toggle switch and connected to a 10 gal tank in the rear, it worked very well for the emergency and tire duties that I needed it for.

Great stuff Dan! I bet you can do some serious sandblasting with that rig!

I guess a little tweaking could get you a lot more CFM, if you really needed it.

I daydream about buying a big Harbor Freight V twin compressor head and coupling it to my PTO. It produces 13cfm @90psi at only 1200 RPM. A couple of them ganged up would get 26cfm, and that's hard to beat for $200+ scrap tank, belts, and a little hardware.
