Homemade Grapple

Skeptic,

That's looking very professional. Hope you keep posting pictures.

You mentioned using T1 for strength. If T1 is like most alloys, you don't get any improvement until you harden it. Did you use prehardened plate and if so, how do you deal with localized annealing from welding and cutting? For example, where your small box tube penetrates each finger would probably be a bad place to have annealed. Or do you plan on heattreating the whole thing as an assembly?

Hope you talk about costs on this. Probably most of us have similiar "armchair" projects where cost is a big consideration.

John

Hello,

That looks like it's getting a fine piece of machinery !
At the moment I work as a calculator in a lasercutting and sheet bending subcontractor in the Netherlands.

Over here, the most popular low-wear material is Hardox 400, used in many tillage machinery. Hardox is as wear resistant as other materials but easier to drill, grind and weld.
It is a very popular material for medium wear parts because it combines the wear resistance with it's capabilities to be welded. We also use lots of DOMEX material as a high strength steel, with less wear resistance.
