It appears from your pics, that if you back out the shock from the bottom housing by 2" using a spacer, there isn't a lot of shock that is left in the housing -- do you think this might be a weak point for the shock??

If I wanted a smaller boost in lift, could I use a 1" long nipple instead of 2" ?

sure i you could raise it like you want and no there is still a large amount of shock still inside the mount for it to be safe and secure. i would go the whole 2'' if i was you . you will notice better and easier steering right away not to mention it looks better when the gator is level and not divin forward.. i'm still workin on a lift for the back that shouldn't take too long.if anyone is interested in the rearend lift when i
m finish building and testing let me know . they shouldn't cost that much to build and paint.that would be nicea gator raised 4'' with some 27'' mud tires..the front a arms wouldn't be a problem to build for some extra hieght in the front.

Made a visit to the local Ace hardware store. Found a few items that would probably work for spacers. One approach that I really liked is some nylon washers: they are 1.620" OD and 0.31" thick. So if the overall diameter is sufficient, I could stack up enough washers to the desired height (e.g. 6x0.31 = 1.86").
Whaddya think?
Is it important to get the OD = 1.75, or will 1.62" be okay? I did find some steel washers that are exactly 1.75, and I could use those as caps along with the nylon washers.

By the way, I don't have a HPX yet -- have a Trail Gator ordered. Getting pretty pumped up to get that baby !!!!
Any other thoughts on what to do to the HPX?

sure the washers will work just as long as you put a 1 3/4 washer on top and one on the bottom like you said.here is some pics of my tires i just got them today. some 27'' 589's
