Homemade Trash Can Carrier

I built this out of scrap I had sitting around. I didn't have any 2" square tubing to make a receiver hitch but I will get a piece the next time I am in the city. I have it bolted to another receiver just for a test.

To use, tilt the trash can back and sit the front on the upper lip at the bottom. Then push the top of the can forward. The middle of the can will hit the upright and if you push it a little more the bottom falls off onto the lowest piece and the top bar hooks into the C channel. The rear wheels are only about 6" off the ground, but I don't have big hills to worry about so it works fine for me.

To remove the can from the holder, you have to lift it up about 3/4" and tilt it back.

Also, I can lower the tailgate with the holder on the receiver.

I guess I am real lazy I just drop the cart handle onto the hitch between the ball and hitch body and drive away.

One of our local TV presenters did that. When he remembered he was 5 miles down the highway, the wheels had worn off, there was a hole worn in the bottom of the bin and all his garbage was scattered down the highway. :thumbsup:

If your interested I can give you dimensions off of my dual cansporter... It's a shame they went to cheap manufacturing, the first time I loaded the trashcans on they overloaded the side mounting bar. After which I took it to the shop & began modifying. What is so odd is the latching, pivot action, locking pins, & even the lifting arms themselves have been able to handle twice the weight it took to make the lateral side bar to fail! Why they failed at this point is beyond me, the only thing it could be is greed or well... stupidity. I've owned the cansporter for ???? 7 years maybe longer can't remember. I've never taken it inside, stored it out of the elements or anything. Every Sunday I attach it take the cans down to the street & leave it attached until monday evening when bring them trashcans back up to the house. I disconnect the pin & throw the thing on the ground by the trash cans, there's no love for it, although there should be & it have worked flawlessly after modifying it.

I can say getting the perfect height is essential to success but you can make the lifting action eccentric which makes the scoop arm fall down below 90° while maintaining a high lift clearance when it's in the locked upright position. This gives you a shorter lifting distance while being able to scoop up the bar on the
Trash can no matter what position the vehicle is in or the height.
