<font color=blue>...It's only going to get worse...</font color=blue>

Hi Harv,

That's exactly what the insurance agent said...

If I thought the rates were something this year.... Well, expect the rates to have major increases next year... it's not gonna get any better... /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

JMIII,

Ouch that hurts. I'm sure your daughter was very dissapointed.

I moved to NJ Shore from MA (back in MA now) after graduating college in '97. My auto insurance on a 4 year old subaru went from $600, to $2,400!!!! What a shock that was. I got quotes of over $3,000. This was for the minimum state requirement in both cases. Currently paying $800 a year for my truck with Maximum coverage.

Unlike others, I won't throw the blame at the "greedy" insurance companies. I don't like high premiums either ... but I've seen enough insurance payouts (not personally) to realize why the rates go up. Yes, I've seen all the stories (and notes here too) about people who've had no claims in 20+ years and now their insurance is going up.
Now ... let's look at the other side. Did you see the news over the past few years about some less wealthy "names" (which is what Lloyd's calls their shareholders) trying to sue Lloyds of London? They were incensed because they suddenly discovered that after years of modest gains, they were suddenly being asked to provide millions of dollars to help Lloyds pay off a few fabulously large claims. Many were being forced to spend every penny they had - including mortgaging or selling their homes.
Let's look at the jury awards - especially in Texas - for accidents, product liability and the like. Texas is where every litigant wnats their case heard. Can you say "breast implants?" Who do you think pays for those after they lose the appeals? Hmm ... the insurance companies? And where are the insurance companies supposed to get the money? They're not allowed to print it like our government ... it comes from premiums.
So, where do I lay the blame? Greedy lawyers, ignorant and uneducated juries, judges who wouldn't recognize science if it bit them in the posterior.
High car premiums for kids? Hmm - wonder why ... maybe it has something to do with the accidents and deaths caused by younsters getting their first real taste of freedom and power?? Read your local paper - if they're anything like mine, they show all the accidents, drunk driving charges, etc. Watch the traffic when you drive .... traffic is getting more and more aggresive and a pretty fair percentage is youngsters in cars way too powerful for them. The cars are more expensive and hence the payouts to repair or replace are higher and higher. I just found out that a replacement windshield for my bitty motorhome is $1700 (Cdn). If I put in a claim ... I pay $50 and they pay about $1100 (US). My premium, in total is only $425 a year .... do the math.
Persoanlly, I wish they'd have those kind of premiums here ($8000/yr) instead of this bullcrap no-fault insurance we're stuck with .... no-fault makes it easy for insurance companies to insulate themselves from the wrath of poor drivers, but I dislike paying for others poor habits. For example, my brother-in-law would not be able to afford to drive if he were anywhere else besides Saskatchewan ... way too many accidents and tickets. But, since they have no-fault (and worse - government sponsored) insurance there .... he's still paying less than I am.
Let's put the blame where it belongs ... and that ain't the big bad bogeyman insurance companies .... it's the consumer, the juries and worst of all, the litigators who're causing this.

Wingnut,

(Whilst holding chest in agony of surprise) I agree completely. I recall an acquaintance crowing happily about getting a 20 year old roof replaced because of "hail damage". I just put a new roof on the place we bought last year. I was planning to wait a while because the new additions were quite a bit more expensive than we had planned....big surprise. However, we had a leak I had patched, and it made sense to do the whole roof so it would match the additions. It was suggested to me that I should try to claim hail damage from a storm a few months back which I couldn't remember dropping hail on me. Perhaps I'm just a sucker, but I have trouble trying to cheat even an insurance company. Another story: Before my older boy went off to the Navy, he had an "interesting" early 70's Plymouth Duster. We had good times rebuilding the carb and trying to keep the suspension from giving up completely, but at last it threw a rod, and that pretty much convinced the boy to get something else to play with. The car was parked in front of the house, and during an ice storm a young girl slid into it and pretty well smashed it. When the girl's father arrived, I told him the car was a wreck and not to worry about it, but he had to report the accident to his insurance company to get the damage to the daughter's car repaired. When their agent called me, he offered (I think) $1,000 for the old wreck. I told him it wasn't worth that much, but he said that was the book value and I should just consider it my good luck.

Chuck

Uh Oh ... if you're agreeing with me, I'd better go back and check out what I wrote!!! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
Seriously, I don't really know what we expect when we pay low premiums and then want big bucks in exchange. Where's the money supposed to come from.
Don't know 'bout y'all ... but here in Michigan, we all got major sticker shock this year. Insurance premiums went up ... besides what the insurance companies needed ... by $70 to $90 PER VEHICLE. This state has a stupid "catastrophic injury" fund in order to keep the rates on the stupid no-fault insurance down. Insurance company is only responsible for the first (I think) half-mil of any absurd award, after that the money comes out of this fund. So, between my bike, 2 vehicles and motorhome ... I get to support this ridiculous fund to the tune of $330 this year. Because the fund was "getting low".
Is it possible for the government to get involved in ANYTHING without making it worse???

Wingnut,

You hit the nail on the head. Has anyone see jury awards for the tobaco companies. Now I realize they have fault in the cigarettes they sell and that nicotine is addictive, but awarding multibillion dollar awards is absurd. The last time I checked you shouldn't be breathing in smoke from any type of "fire" so why would people expect that tar and nicotine and the smoke are good for you.

The old rule of insurance hasn't changed. Insurance companies don't lose money, they just raise our rates. Since you can't be withoug insurance on your car, boat, bike, motorhome (in most states) then you have to pay. You need homeowners, personal articles, umbrella policies. All to protect you from someone with a hangnail or a splinter they got on your land.

We purchased our land last year and the first thing we did was get an umbrella policy to protect us from someone trespassing and suing us. We have (2) auto's, (1) each of Personal articles, umbrella and homeowners.

Oh yeah and our homeowners is more than it normally will be due to construction and there is more risk. Fortunately for us all these policies are only costing us about $2k a year. Until I have a claim, then it will hit, $10k most likely.

My insurance went up from $1000 to $1700.
P-M-O! (Don't ask...)
I spoke to my Kubota dealer/owner and he said "suck it up and pay it." I shopped everywhere-sucked it up and paid it.
My dealer and I both use the same State Farm agent in Oregon, and have been for over 15 years.
Something is wrong here.

what really fries me ... (<font color=blue>Since you can't be withoug insurance on your car, boat, bike, motorhome (in most states)</font color=blue> ) is that not only do we need to insure our vehicles (as well as our houses) ... but we need to buy "uninsured motorist" insurance on them too. See anything wrong with that picture?
First we need to hang all the lawyers.
Then the uninsured motorists.
Then that fat slob in NY that's suing the fast food joints.
Hey ... maybe I should get into the gallows business.
Seriosuly, we had an excellent law at the birthing of this nation that needs to be re-enacted. Make lawyers illegal again!
