Honda GX390 in the winter, not good

Also try ethanol-free, if possible, at least in cold weather.
You should never run ethanol gas in a small engine if you can help it. It deteriorates fuel lines and clogs the system

Yeah, I use premium from the gas station nearby that a local small engine shop swears by (for this reason.)

Any Honda dealer in your area should be able to get you a cold weather kit. I'm also in ontario and have seen numerous berco/ kimpex ATV snowblowers with hondas that experienced similar issues with the govenor linkage. The cold weather cured them all

I'm totally going to investigate this, thanks! This is driving me batty.

So it's just a mechanical problem with the fuel linkage? Does it freeze up after the engine has already warmed up?

Correct yeah. Engine can be running for a while, governor freezes up, starts surging or loses power; generally runs terrible and/or dies.

Yeah on the gas. If by premium you mean around 92 octane... dont. You need to run a lower octane in that engine...87-89 but yes...high quality non-ethanol most importantly. The guy above said the cold weather kit works well. Also maybe some sticky lubricant on the part that wants to freeze.

Im from Alabama so we definitely have different weather problems. My wife is from New Brunswick, though!

I have NO problem running 92 octane in my small engines, and that means from chainsaws, 13hp Honda, 8 horse on up Kohlers and Tecumseh...

In fact, the Vanguard on my BSM runs the best it ever has, on premium fuel.

No it's not necessarily going to give problems but in principle, low octane is suited for lower compression engines and high octane is suited for high compression engines...like chainsaws. Octane is increased by an additive only to control the intensity of combustion. It does NOT increase power. You'll actually lose a little bit in lower compression engines.

I use 100LL from the local airport.
non ethanol gas not sold in the state.
Small engines run great on 100LL, even my 8N.
