Troubleshoot an external monitor that is not automatically detected when connected

When connected to an external monitor, the notebook PC should automatically configure display settings for additional monitor. To manually detect the external monitor, press Fn+F4 to toggle through the display modes.
You may have to press Fn+F4 more than once to change the display mode.

jimmyj, there are 2 things here I am thinking. One is you are trying to see your laptop on the TV screen. Or the other is you trying to watch TV on the laptop. which is it?

If you are trying to see your laptop on the TV, what type of video output from laptop are you trying to use? VGA? yellow jack? some laptop may have hdmi output.

If you are trying to watch TV on your laptop, do you have a tv tuner for it?

One thing that snags things up sometimes, is a lot of these newer laptops run really high resolutions. You might try configuring your 2nd screen output to something like 1024x768 with 60hz refresh. To do this, right click on your desktop (make sure your in an open area) from the pop up menu choose personalize, (you are trying to get to display settings, and change your settings. These steps sometimes are slightly different depending on your vid cards. These adjustments are on your second monitor. In these settings you have lots of different options to copy your primary monitor, or stretch your desk top over to it.
Good luck.

Thanks all. I'm going to give it another go today (after I mow the lawn, took 9 hours to bring in hay yesterday, whew).

For clarity, I want to show pictures I have saved on the laptop on the new TV screen. I do not want to watch TV on the laptop.

I'll let you know how it goes.

NOTES: Have tried changing resolution. Have tried f4, heck all the f's. Have tried to add monitor or change settings through control panel. All the normal stuff I do at work to use multiple monitors or to play a projector, but none work. I"m using a VGA cable that is brand new. I am going to try a different cable today to see if maybe that's it.

If the new Sony has an Ethernet connection hook up a cable and download something like PS3 Media Server or TVersity and you can access you pics that way.
