JohnK, so you drag logs out flat on the ground?? Ever get front end of log hung up on rock or something. Could you lift front end of log off the ground with 3-pt and still pull with draw bar??

Sure, but you need 2 chains. If you just lift with the drag chain, it takes away the benefit of the low mount drawbar.

If you can get close enough, you can throw a timber hitch around the log near the end and then hook the chain to your lowered lower lift arms, leaving very little slack. Don't use the top link! If you have stabilizers that will let you set a minimum spacing between the arms, this will let you lift the end of the log just a bit off the ground without transferring the load to a high hitch point. This doesn't leave a lot of room for the log to swing and if you try to turn too sharp you might bend something you'd rather leave straight, and it isn't quite as low as hitching to the drawbar, but it keeps the log from digging a furrow as you drag it and makes for a much easier pull.

flINTLOCK ,

I never got a log hung up dragging it yet. I haven't used it yet. I won't use it till this spring. I plan on lifting the log w/ 3 pt and hooking to drawbar w/ front of log off ground. I'll try to chain it to drawbar w/ front of log lifted. Haven't tried it yet but have a lot of expectations...

When I was heating with wood. Pulled a lot of logs out of the woods with a set of tong and chain. Tong were mounted on a short boom pole. Then chain was warped around log and hooked to drawbar hook. Worked very well. But back then I had a 6000 lbs tractor.

Ronjhall,
I purchased the same grab hook and have it on my draw bar. To that I have a few links of 3/8 grade 70 chain hooked to skidding tongs to drag trunks out of the woods.. Good to see you shop at the same places I do.
My hooks are over 30 years old. Bought them from the local farm store. They definitely are not as shinny as the Norther Tool one pictured. :D
