( my husband tried the screwdriver technique to no avail. Is there a certain place that the pto lever should be when trying this?

Actually.. you use the screwdriver to turn the yoke side of the pto drive shaft.. not to turn the tractos pto stub..
The screwdriver is nothing more than a lever to help you get those big blades to turn ever so slightly in order to line up the pto stub/yoke splines.
Don't worry.. this all gets easier with practice.. after you have had this thing a few years... it will take you longer to walk to the fridge for a frosty beverage than to hitch a commonly used 3pt implement..
