Yes, I think you could rebarrel the M7722H for the 17. Problem is that the Hornet really is a sweet shooter and the reintroduction of it several years back as a mainstream caliber is probably what started the ball rolling again for the new 17 rimfires and the new 204Hornaday/Ruger. The old time loads were OK but loaded with the 35 gr V-max or similar TNT bullets the velocity is around 3100FPS. Out of a quality r**** it shoots darn good and a guy can still load the variety of heavy bullets for bigger critters that produce velocities like in the 2500FPS range with a 50 gr solid or hollow point etc.
I think people latched onto the Hornet with the new type ammo because it shot flat, did not make a lot of racket and did not richochet, at least with the V-max stuff. I have tested it on water back home--it does not skip, a 22Mag with solids skips and skips. Course, they got some cool stuff out now for the 22 Mag--at long last /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
Ever heard of nutria, they got a bounty on them in Louisiana or did recently last time I checked. We used to shoot those things till the barrels would glow. One of the first times I saw a Hornet in action I think was when a old fellow pulled up beside me in his jonboat and popped a nutria out at about 200 plus yards of a log. If we had V Max and similar rounds back then it would haver been so much easier--still--I shot them things by the dozens. Before the eco people come after me they are an imported SE Asian water rat and are a destructive force on the native habitat. They are giant aquatic rats. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif and we don't like them. They are on my shoot on sight list. J

Was at the store and picked up Shooting Times magazine. There is an artical claiming that the .17MII is going to be the LARGEST PRODUCT INTRODUCTION IN FIREARM HISTORY /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. Well, it is a bold statement /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. I think four different ammo makers and I think 15 gun companies are staged to introduce the new caliber/ammo this late Summer or early Fall. The artical confirms that initially all rounds will be loaded with the 17 grain .17 caliber V-Max except for those by ATK which will feature the TNT hollowpoint. Conversion kits and barrels for popular rifles like the Ruger 1022 and Mark II auto pistol are well along and soon available or just buy a new r****. Just cuz the .17 is a fun round don't mean I am quitting on the .22 /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif. Anyways, JFYI. J
