This is the start of our horse barn project. Overall size is 50'x26.5'. Main part of building is 30'x26.5'. There will be two side sheds - 10'x26.5'. One will house hay and shavings until the new tractor arrives. The other shed is actually a roof over the run-in area for the horses. They will be able to run in/out of stalls at their leisure. Barn will have metal roof with light panels and board and batten siding. We will be putting two zones for radiant heat. One will be for the tack room while the other will be for remaining area - for future use. If the horses go I will have a heated workshop.

Soundguy...you can see in the background some of the fencing i have started based on discussion last year regarding preservative. I have almost 3 acres fenced with 4x4 posts/1x6x16' boards - 3 rails plus a cap rail.

Concrete will be poured this weekend or first of week. 6" slab with perimeter curbs.

Will update as we progress. I have booked two weeks (vacation - Ha!) with carpenter. We will have 90% of the barn completed. I will do the stalls in the fall along with slidng doors etc.

Image 1 & 2 shows road and site prep.

Completion of curbs prior to starting walls.

I will be trying solar panels to heat tack room during winter months.

Will be watching your progress. Looks good.

Isn't it funny the amount of work we go through just to make more work. We started with a three sided shelter and when my wife bought a foal I had to add a stall on the side. Then her Arab mare needed a stall so I got to add another. Now my wife is so busy cleaning stalls that she doesn't have time to ride and me, I don't ride.

I hope you get your own shop to play in. Its great to have a place of your own, its taken me almost 7 years but I'm almost finished mine. I think.

Hi DoubleG,

I have two other buildings to play in. One is my 12'x18' blacksmith shop. The other is 22'x28' workshop. My wife doesn't know it yet but I am willing to trade my old shop for the new building - some how I don't think it will go over!!!

I don't ride but I am interested in small work horse - Canadian or Morgan.

I have enough acreage and woods to allow the horses to work.

Thanks fo you interest.

Bones1,

The curbs will help preserve the walls from urin/manure. It took alot of convincing to get the builders to do this.

Will keep the pics coming.

We had one of the worse thunder storms last night to date (with the exception of the one that hit an oak tree in the back pasture). The following pics do not do it justice. It lasted almost 3 hours. We would just think it finally ended and it would roll back in off the bay.

Tomorrow we do board and battens, windows and man door. Friday is a day off for crew. Trusses will arrive tomorrow. When the metal roof arrives Monday we will use the boom truck to position trusses on deck. We are still aiming for mid-week, end of week finish next week with exception of sliding doors, tack room and stalls. They will be my fall and winter projects.

Light 2 shows a slight line from lightning on right side.

Enjoy the light show!

Pics from the other day. Completed second floor joists. We are using scissor trusses. Main aisle will have weight load hence the 2x6 on 12" o/c. Areas above stalls/tack room are 2x6 on 16" o/c. Joists are air nailed and are secured with metal hangers.

Boarding In:

Yesterday we finished boarding in and laid second story floor.

Today we are working on exterior board and batten.
We will install vertical boards and let them dry out a bit over the weekend before putting on battens.

Ped doors and windows will go in today.
