Horse fence

for Horses.... I am missing something.

Do you own the horses?
How big an area are you confining # horses to ?
Just pasture grazers or you plan on doing somehing with the horses ?

I don't own any horses, but intend to board probably 5 or so on about 10 acres of open pasture. Its fenced now on 2 sides with conventional stock fence and we want to fence the driveway, ~500', and thought the white vinyl would look nice. There are so many contridicting comments though, some say its good and others say its a mistake! Truth is I know absolutely nothing about horses and don't want to do it wrong. I do know that wood is out, its stronger alright, but don't want the maintenance or have horses eat it.

It will be OK to line the driveway or in any perimeter situation or double installation......They make different grades and you will get what you pay for. ...

What grade/brand/type would you suggest? Is the 3 rail stuff sold at HD or Lowes good enough? It looks kinda flimsey. Geeze, I know just enough about this to be confused

I am not familar with NW Nevada and if it is like northern Ca or Oregon you will be Ok But if it is anything like the Vegas area your 10 ac will look like a concrete parking lot if you put 5 horses on it.

I am not familar with NW Nevada and if it is like northern Ca or Oregon you will be Ok But if it is anything like the Vegas area your 10 ac will look like a concrete parking lot if you put 5 horses on it.

We have lots of water so it stays green with abundent feed, and there is a wide stream on one boundry. I know what you mean though, so often we see some poor animals on a dry desert lot with no shade, thats cruel to us.

What do you mean by 'stock fence'?

T-Posts with hog wire and 3 strands of barbed wire on top. (I know its not the best for horses, but thats whats there on 2 sides with the creek on the third side)

OK, I can see that boarding horses would be more than I want to do. I still want a fence that could work for horses if the need came up in the furure, or I sell the place, so would the cheapo HD 3 rail fence work? Or should I spend double for the heavier stuff?

I don't know about horses, so I can't say if vinyl will hold them back or not. I used to date a girl into horses and they had vinyl fences along the front of the property and along the drive in. Seemed to work good for them. I also know a guy down the street who put up the vinyl three rails fence sold at Home Depot to keep out his horses from around his house. He put it all the way around as a big circle. He's had it for five or six years and it looks like the day he installed it.

I have a vinyl three rail fence that I found online at http://www.gardnerfence.com that was almost half the price of Home Depot and Lowes. I paid $3.25 a foot for it three years ago. I'm sure it's gone up, but at the time, Home Depot was around $6 a foot when I figured it all out.

My fence looks brand new. No aging or weathering of any kind. But I don't know if it will hold back a horse or not.

Check out their website and give em a call for no other reason than to see what it will cost and if they have a dealer in your area. I had to drive to a small feed store North of Dallas to get mine, which was around 120 miles each way.

IMO, no one who loves their horse is going to board it at a place that's got a barbed wire fence on 2 sides and a creek on the third side. So, it wont matter what's on the fourth side.

This is why I asked the question about containment or confinement. About the only fence that will 'hold them back' is a high tensile fence or a pipe fence.

I agree.. 'pasture' or cattle fence.. the 4x4 stuff is just not suitable for equines. I've personally seen horses put down with hoof injuries from pasture fencing.

None of the horse peple I know use vinyl fencing.. only 3 & 4 board PT or black ( cresote ). As for cribbing.. I'm sure your milage may vary.. however.. I've not seen problems with horses cribbing on pt or black boards, unless they border other pastures with horses in them. then there can be 'reach overs'.. but a hot wire stops that.
