Horse fly problem

Great comprehensive post Soundguy. I went running to my wife with it. Turns out real women dont put fly chemicals in their horses. She did, however, get over me using grease on the haying equipment.

Thank you very much! You've provided a lot of great suggestions and counsel. I'll be printing off this thread and sharing it with my neighbor.

If anyone has anything else to add, I will check back on a regular basis and feed the new information to my neighbor.

Thanks again for all the help and advice.

Regarding the fly larvae eaters - The company my wife buys from is Arbico. She says you get more for your money than from Spaulding, another supplier. Arbico will give a discount if you mention that Spyder Lake Farm referred you.

One thing about the fly predators.. If you use them.. you pretty much can't use any of the other trap or insecticide based measures in conjunction with it.

Irwin... our fly traps seem equally well at trapping paper wasps and hornets ( mostly what we have here in florida ).. though i do find the occasional yellow jacket in there... we don't have many of them where I'm at.. but you do see a 'guest appearance' every now and then..

This is a drawing (not too good) of my favorite fly trap. It is easy to build and works well during the height of fly season which is around May down here in Louisiana. The more flies that get in it, the better it attracts them. Use a 5 gallon water bottle and cut it like shown in the drawing and tape it back together as shown. Don't glue it as you have to take it apart to empty it. You can put commercial fly lure in it or anything real stinky that attracts flies. I sit them on top of a barrel where they get both sun and shade during the day. I put one by a commercial stable one year and caught 4 gallons of flies in one month. (Didn't count them, must be a million)

You can do the same thing with 2 liter soda bottles but they don't work nearly as well for me.

As for keeping them off the horses, has anyone tried a salt lick with sulfur? It seems to have cut down on the amount of flies we see on our horse and donkey.

I use one in my cattle pen. ( horses seem to ignore it at my place )

Our donkey and horse did too at first. We "trained" them to lick it by putting a little sweet feed atop the salt/sulfur block. When they got to the last little bit, they licked the block too and I guess they found it to be "tasty".
