Horse lays down for a couple hours = start digging grave?

My wife had her horse for 37 years. We had to put him down a couple of years ago when he couldn't get up one day. She took it kind of hard.
Yeah I know how she felt cause I sure took it hard the day he had to be put down. Still hurt to think about it.

That horse is a beauty. I know you'll always cherish the memories and the life you had together. Some animals just hit the jackpot in life. Same as some owners.
You were all blessed to have it as it should be.

Out here in North western Nevada, I see plenty of animals laying down for various reasons.
Horses lay down, roll in the dirt or grass and then nap. I watch the cattle more closely. Around here, their behavior is sometimes a weather gauge. If their laying down I prepare for lightning and thunder. Horses get twitchy when the air changes, and they detect more negative ions or something. The deer do the same thing. We have mustangs around here, and they lay down for comfort and leave a few standing to watch for predators. A lot of horses are smarter than their riders, if they're tired, they lay down if they can.
