Horse meat

I've had it accidentally in europe, don't really care for it. Im not crazy about the idea of eating companion animals. You won't ever catch me eating dog or cat, but largely because the places they do eat them the conditions are incredibly cruel. I think things should in general be used for their best and highest use. A companion animal like a dog that interacts with and depends on humans is better as a companion than food. A chicken on the other hand is for food, has evolved that way and been bred for it. A horse is probably a bit of both...

As far as I know I have not had horse meat. Given the chance I would probably try it just out of curiosity.

I don't think eating horse meat is forbidden. The articles mentioned that the horse meat wasn't under normal FDA/USDA regulations, and that some drugs commonly given to horses are banned in meats intended for human consumption.

Eat Trigger? Neigh!!!!

I think it would be the perfect to mix into fast food burgers. Id perfer to have 50% horse meat in my Taco Bell than the seaweed and TVP they currently use.
I'm sure it would taste better w/horse, but i don't think it's the seaweed or TVP that's the problem, it's the pink slime.:yuck:

Interesting how some people lump horses into the same category domesticated dogs and cats.

I never considered a livestock animal the same as a dog/cat. I suppose i draw my line much the same way virtually all municipalities do when saying ok to dogs/cats but not "livestock" including horses when zoned residential.

Back in the late 60's there was a meat market in Hubbard, Oregon that sold horsemeat. A large Hispanic population was the base consumer. I ate it and was fine with it. I'm not a big meat eater but it was ok. There is a meatpacker looking for a location in Oregon for a horse processing plant.

I lived in Germany for several years and have had horse meat while visiting France. It was ok but not as good as other meats. Also had dog in Korea and Cat in Austria - neither was particularly good. I knew about the dog and horse before I ate it but "Fritz" was a surprise by some of my Austrian "friends."

I ordered horse meat from the menu at a restaurant in Malta when I visited there about 8 years ago. It was a little stronger than beef but I wouldn't leave town for it.

Locally I know a guy who is picking up unwanted horses for like $25 each banking on them opening a horse meat processing plan over in MO. In the LBL there are reports of people going in with horses and leaving without them and people just find them wandering the trails. Shooting and burying them is expensive but a horse meat market would give the system some relief. I will take a bite to taste it. Dad said he found out after the fact that he ate horse in Brazil when docked there during WWII.
