horse paddock footing

2 years ago I built this paddock one end of it gets pretty mucky when it rains so we set out to fix this and provide a paddock for any horse that needs some rehabbing of their feet. couple things it provides which are a softer footing and a more comfortable place to lay down. the pea gravel might be one of the better footings to aid in the healing and both top materials allow for easy manure picking.

the material list included:

* 2"-4" crushed rock
* mirafi 140N geotextile
* ecogreengrid (similar to hoofgrid)
* sand
* pea gravel

first I put down 6" of the crushed rock, packed and leveled and on top of that on the shelter side laid down 6" of the pea gravel, in the muddy end I layered the mirafi over the packed rock then the greengrid and on top of that the sand to fill in the grid and then another 2-3" of sand. hopefully this ends up being the final solution to the problem. in the other paddocks I have used a combo of 1-1/4" minus packed 3-4" deep and then topped with 5/8" minus, and most have held up pretty well. if this experiment goes well the rest will be finished this way.

Very professional looking job! We use just straight pea gravel with no base and it holds up fairly well. With your base it should drain much better and last many years.

Maybe it's just the photo, but it looks like your top layer is limestone screenings in that last photo. I don't see any pea gravel. I agree pea gravel is great for their feet, but it doesn't pack at all, so it's constantly getting pushed around the stalls.
