Monday around midnight I got home from work and a great, hairy beast was charging up my driveway at me. It was a mighty Shetland pony! Now the stupid thing has been here for 4 days and it won't go away. I've asked all the neighbors (mostly old farmers) if they know anything about it, and nobody does. It has a bridle. I don't have a fence, just a large yard and the thing WON'T LEAVE my yard. At first I tried to be nice, tried to bait it with food. Couldn't get close. Then I tried to lasso it, and that sure didn't work (but my girlfriend thought it was hilarious). Then I tried to chase it off with yells and thrown walnuts, but it just runs to the edge of my yard, gives me the slip, then runs right back into my backyard again. Sometimes it will run into my woods, then as soon as I go into the house, it's back in my yard again!
IT WON'T LEAVE.

I'm gonna blasted for this, but people in Europe eat horse all the time.
I like almost all animals, but shetland ponies are not real high on the list. Neighbor had one when I was a kid.. The meanest thing I ever encountered.

I've heard of people droping cats and dogs off, but this the first time I've heard of someone droping off a horse.

With the cost of food and the hay shortage in Texas, there actually has been quite a few horse "abandonements". The one I have heard of most is someone will load their horse or horses up, go to the local riding event and while the competitors are in the arena, they will simply tie the horses up to someone's trailer. Kinda sad actually, these folks obviously don't want their horses condemned, they just can't afford to feed them so they think who better to "give" them to but another horse lover.....

Wow, a pony! We live on a rural road and people(scum bags) drop of a dog or cat on occasion, but a pony is a bit much. Wish I had some constructive advice to offer but I'm at a loss. Don't know if the humane society will even consider a pony. Maybe you could track down the owner by circulating a photo of the pony to the local veterinarians. Good luck with this conundrum.

the only thing you can do is call the local law an have them pick the pney up.

I would think if its a pony its probably an escapee and someone somewhere is missing their pony ... then again there have been a lot of "release" and drive on horse's lately.

You might as well make you a pen ... as least then you have control!!

I would build a pen to keep it OUT maybe. It's not really hurting anything, but it's crapping all over my yard and driveway and I don't want it to be my responsibility. I didn't realize the sheriff's department would do anything about it. I'm about to head to work now, if it's still there in the morning I'll call them.

At first I thought it belonged to someone, but since nobody around here knows anything about it, I think someone dumped it. It does look pretty mangy.

My horse was once chased through her fence by a black bear ( long story) and she was missing for about 10 days. Finally a friend of mine heard on the local AM radio station that someone found a horse... So, if I were you I would call the local radio station...

I don't see anything wrong with eating horses, although horse slaughter is illegal in this country.

If I let it continue to stay here, it will eventually become "my" horse. And since I don't have any fencing of any kind, it will be my responsibility if the horse tramples someone's beloved pet or kicks a kid in the head.

I'm probably gonna get flamed for THIS, but does anyone know if it is illegal to just shoot and bury the horse? I live in Missouri. If you think it is unethical to shoot the horse, you are welcome to come pick it up...
