Are you anywhere near Lamar/Liberal ... I have some friends up there that can probably pick that pony up ... if you can catch him.

I'm in Newton county, actually pretty close! Hopefully my co-worker and I can catch it. You are right, that is going to be the hard part. I'm only 160 lbs, it can probably drag me.... :-o lol

Not sure that is correct.

On Nov. 18 Barack Obama handed the reins back to Doubrava and horse owners all over the county. H.R. 2112, The Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2012, was quietly signed into existence, a bill that opened the floodgates of funding to the U.S. Department of Food and Agriculture so that they could once again inspect horses destined for slaughter. That funding was taken away in 2007 resulting in the cessation of slaughter.

Well now that is interesting. Everyone I've talked to said it was illegal, and I didn't find anything online that said otherwise (although I did see reports that such legislation was in the works). Well, I probably won't be going into the horse slaughter business anytime soon, but I always thought it was kind of silly to outlaw it.

I've also been hearing on the radio (NPR) that the law that prohibits the slaughter of horses (for consumption I assume?) is about to expire.

I sure am glad to hear you have come up with someone to care for it.

Having spent much of my youth building fences, chasing cattle and being stomped on and bitten by horses, I informed my wife many years ago, I don't want anything without a key or kill switch.

If you still have the horse in the area see if you can contact your local horsemans council. They will help you with this situation. Here in ohio we have chapters in about every county.
here is the link.

It is not illegal to slaughter horses. The government had withheld the money for the inspectors, making the sale of the meat illegal, essentially shutting it down. All that is being done now is that the inspectors will once again be funded, allowing the legal sale of the meat.

Anyone who thinks horse slaughter is cruel should see what happens when an old broken down horse is turned out on public land. Death at a slaughterhouse is quick. Death by starvation, cold, and predators is not.

ddb123,

Check to see if there is any kind of "Equine Rescue" in your area.

I volunteer at one (that is also where my horses are coming from).

She regularly goes and picks up abandoned or neglected horses and ponys.

But we are in VA (so no help to you).

David

Well, last night when I got home from work, there it was at its usual spot in front of my garage. I went in to change and kept an eye on it through the window, and waited for my co-worker to show up. About 20 minutes later (around 12:30), they did and the horse was gone! We looked all around the yard, went inside and waited about an hour, then looked again before giving up. The horse had disappeared, and this morning he was still gone. But as I was typing this, I looked out the window and he's back! Lol, I knew this would happen. This is why I did not post "Free Pony!" on craigslist. I will look into everyone's suggestions today. Thank you all, I didn't know there was such a thing as Equine Rescue or a local horse chapter.

And yes Oliver, I agree that a probable slow death by abandonment is pretty cruel treatment.

There are lots of horse rescues across the country including Missouri but many (including ours) are full. CL has tons of ads for free or cheap horses due to the job market and people are dumping them everywhere. A domestic horse doesn't have a chance in the wild.

A $10 bag of grain and one cup a night should earn his trust and might make him easier to fetch up. We've had horses get free from volunteers here and they try to run after them. I just head for the feed shed, shake some grain in a coffee can and ta-da, no more chasing.
