Tbone, I just wanted to make sure you did'nt have that problem. You would have to hold it in relief for a pretty long time to get it that hot. That brush hog does a good job of "converting kinetic energy to heat", have you ever felt how hot the brushog gearbox gets? Especially when your cutting heavy stuff. It does sound like it's a little out of adjustment being that you can hold it in relief. Just curious, what's the HP rating of the brush hog vs the tractor?

TBone, have you actually measured the temperature? I guess you know that anything over about 115 degrees farenheit is going to "feel" too hot to your hand. You might go back to <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=owning&Number=32151&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1>this thread</A> that I started a long time ago and read what I found out about "normal" temperatures when I thought mine was getting too hot. Don't know if that will help you or not.

Yes, it hardly gets warm at all, even when cutting heavy stuff.

The tractor is 49 HP and the brush hog has a 95 HP gearbox. It is a heavy duty 6' Howse but I have noticed the tractor running hot on a light one that I have too.

Although I didn't have a temperature probe to check the temperature, I used a very scientific method. I felt of the tractor and then found a hot piece of equipment at work (a transformer) that felt about the same and used one of those infrared guns that you point at something to get the temperature. It read 180 degrees.
So you see my calculations could be off just a wee bit. I won't be doing anything to really work it hard again till summer so I am going to locate a thermometer between now and then that I can actually check the temperature of the fluid with and go from there.
Thanks to all of ya'll for the help. Kubmech, I will probably go ahead and adjust the position control linkage just a tad so that I can't make it come off relief when it's all the way back. I usually travel about 3 miles with the cutter raised up before I do much work so if it isn't coming off relief it could get pretty hot before I even get started. I'll check that too.
