I have a 2008 Husqvarna lawn tractor/48" cut hydrostatic with a Briggs V-twin 24 hp and I just got an old Cub Cadet 1250 hydro./42" cut with a 12hp Kohler. The old school Kohler pulls a LOT harder and seems to have more power than the new V-twin. It seems to be the same with old tractors as well. Every old tractor I've used compared to a similar sized new one had more "guts" and lugged through whatever it was doing much better. I can't explain it, I can just prove it.

PS I love old AC orange and hope they bring back a new and improved AC 185; one of my favorite old tractors.

The old "K" series Kohlers had a LOT of torque available that peaked well below the normal 3600 RPM, so when the engine slowed under load, the torque actually increased. Kind of like the old Deere 2 cylinder motors that could out pull their competition of the day, even though they used 4 or 6 cylinder motors. The old Kohlers weren't as efficient, or emmissions friendly as todays motors, but sure had power when you needed it. Your Cub 1250 has a Kohler single cylinder in it, great motor.

It's alot like comparing a Chevy 6.0L V8 and an 8.1L V8, both rated at 340 HP. It's the torque at low RPM that makes the difference. The Briggs 35HP Vanguard Big Block is another example of an engine that makes its peak torque at moderate RPM ratings. Couple pictures of said engine on a Gravely.
