Hot Tub Heating Alternatives

My friends in Sweden tell me something wood fired is the in thing to have there.

An outfit around here makes wood-heated hot tubs, it's a wooden tub with an aluminum woodstove in it. I did some work a couple years ago for a couple who had one, though they didn't have it filled when I was there.
Seems like it would be kind of a PITA to use, between getting the fire going, regulating temperature and cleaning out the ashes.

If I had to do again I would heat it with a water to water plate exchanger getting the water from a hot water heat or boiler. Put the hot tub outside and pumps and filters in the basement out in the open where you can get at them. Our first house we did it that way, works slick. Second one we got one of those self contained ones. Dumb move, what a PITA, it is gone now and we can't get the pumps in the basement on this house. Liked it miss it not worth the work.
