Hot water supply to toilet (oops)

Morning Richard.
It happens :) look at this way, less chance of tank sweating durning the summer months, plus if you get the urge to go while setting on the tractor set,you could as they say kill two birds w/one stone. ;)

I poured hot water into a toilet to clean it and it cracked!...major crack. If you are getting warm water you are probably ok. However if the water line had very hot water in it due to recent use you might do some damage.

A stubbed dead end line won't hurt anything and if you can feed the toilet off a cold 3/4 line that also feeds the shower then at least you won't get a blast of hot in the shower when someone flushes. I'd worry about the toilet cracking as well....then you will have major troubles.
I hooked up our new tub/shower last week and also got the lines crossed in the basement. Was an anti-scald type tap so I had to correct it but the lines in the basement are temporary until the new toilet gets relocated so no big deal. I will wind up with 3/4" lines to the bathroom and run separate 1/2" lines to the tub, sink and toilet.

Keep it hot, you wont miss the cold little splash of water that sometimes occures when you.........
Never mind. Small price to pay, change it to cold.

Don't feel bad. Back about 1969 Ryerson Institude in Toronto put up the first of a group of new towers, about 13floors. Down in the basement somewhere they also got the hot and cold pipes crossed, only these were in the neighbourhood of 8" galvanized. Yes, they fixed them but the resulting "X" between where they came out of the floor slab and entered the ceiling slab sure looked funny.....It was easier than changing every washroom on each floor though.

They wired 15 story new hotel in Prague (in late 70ties:)) and used wrong colored wire for grounding all circuits and had to rewire the whole hotel.

Oh, those miracles of state owned industry and socialistic government, they were always ready to give you a nice surprise:)

Curious about comments of toilets cracking when hot water introduced... I called Kohler Co. this morning & just hung up.

Guy checked with their tech department to be sure and came back saying there is NO issue with hooking up hot water to the toilet other than 'possibly' having TOO hot of water introduced and if that happens, it's possible that the flapper assembly might deteriorate.

I informed him that since I'm on a well (over 100 gpm) and water isn't a concern with me, the first thing I did when I installed the tank onto the bowl was replace their flapper with a "regular" one so I'd get a full flush.

He said they actually recommend people hook up to hot water supply to (as has been already said above) help minimize tank sweating.

So, it seems the myth about minimizing tank sweating has been supported by the company themselves and the myth of toilets exploding from hot water being introduced into them has been flushed

i have installed a valve on some that mixes in some hot with the cold like to just that stop or reduce condensation. not sure if its avaliable or not at lowes or home depot, but I agree all hot is trouble with growth, and the bills .
good luck. clean bottom.

We used to have a mixer valve, but the first time I had to solder some water pipes I couldn't get the darn thing dry enough to solder. It must have taken me an hour to figure out that there was hot water bleeding through the mixer.

We now have a foam lined tank that nearly eliminates the condensation, and I got rid of the darn mixer.

I dont do much soldering, but somewhere on here there was a suggestion to roll up some bread to hold the water back if possibel. And it will brealup and flow smoothly after.( dont think t had to be wheat either) LOL.Also have the same problem with the PVC , I havent had the need t try it yet tho.

As someone mentioned , fix it right. Also, most good hardware/plumbing stores offer a mixing valve that puts both hot and cold water into the water closet to prevent sweating in the humid summer months. If you can't find a mixing valve I have heard some foam, 1/2" thich insulated the tank and prevents sweating. Never tried that but mixing valves do work.
