my wife and were there in a September I think. I highly recommend a mule drawn carriage ride,at night if possible, the Segway tour was fun too. If you don't like beads and lots of people you only have to walk a couple block from bourbon street to find nice quiet bars. Jackson square has the cathederal and some nice aritechture.

Hi Mark, most of the corrupt politicians in our area are now under indictment or already in jail and things have improved immensely in the last 8 years.

Now, according to the State Integrity Association, Virginia ranks corrupt in 47th place out of the 50 states with only 3 states more corrupt and Louisiana is only 15th.

One year ago this weekend, we stayed at the New Orleans Hotels : New Orleans Hotel - French Quarter Hotels - Le Pavillon near the Superdome. I was very pleased with our stay. We were in New Orleans for the high school state championship games at the Superdome.

It just happened to be my wife's birthday, and when we returned to our room, there was a chilled bottle of champagne, and a small chocolate cake in our room. And they did not charge extra for that!!! I thought it was a nice extra touch.

Sorry, I've lived just outside New Orleans for well over half a century and I never heard anyone call it Nawlins until the media started using that word about 15 years ago. No local says Nawlins or New Orleeeens. We all say New Or-le-ans.

You think that's what you say. It comes out 'Nawlins'. :D

Eddie, I'm from 'nawlins. I can't help you on a place to stay since I have been gone a long time. However, there are some things I do when I go back (still have a sister in uptown). I love Cafe Dumond on Decatur St( Find a Location | Cafe Du Monde French Market Coffee Stand ), have Beignets and Coffee Au Lait and watch the pedestrians....it's a great place nestled down in the french Market along the river. Next, have an oyster or shrimp Po-Boy....just down the street from the Cafe is the central Grocery:
Central Grocery

The food there is like no other, so take the time to enjoy a bit of it, you won't regret it.

Eddie, if you want to save on the high price of downtown hotels, I recommend Quality Inn in Gretna. Its right across the river from downtown and the bridge is now toll free. They only have a few rooms left so I recommend booking now. Its listed at $110 a night but I heard you can get a free shuttle back and forth across the river to the French Quarter and the cruise terminal and park while you are on the cruise plus the room for $129. You should be able to see the Jewel from the hotel.

You will have a great cruise on the Jewel. Its one of the few ships that goes to Costa Maya where you can take a short cheap taxi ride to walk the Malecon and visit one of my favorite hangouts. Fernandos 100% Agave is a local restaurant, nothing fancy, that serves very good local dishes and great drinks at a very cheap price. Last time we went there, 2 of us ate lunch and we had 2 margaritas each plus a couple of free drinks and the total was under $20. It is mainly locals and definitely not a tourist trap. They are on the first street from the Malecon.

On Roatan, the semi-sub ride is great.

On Belize an excursion to the Mayan ruins is a must.

We went with the Quality Inn in Gretna. I was hoping to find something in the French Quarter area close to Bourbon Street that we could walk to, but non of them have free parking. Reading the reviews of the valet parking, where offered, where not very good. Gretna looks close enough to take a taxi, or maybe try to find some place to park and just drive there from the hotel to do some sight seeing. We have no interest in the night life, so we'll just be there during the day to explore a little and take a few pictures.

We're still struggling with what we want to do on the excursions. The problem is what to see so we don't do the same thing twice. Coral reef, zip line, Mayan ruins and caving are our goals, finding the right one at each stop is where we are struggling.

Thanks,
Eddie
