Hour Meter-How Does It Calculate?

On the newer digital hour meters do they just show the actual time a engine is running or do they also take into consideration the engine rpm's and what gear you are in while working? Mowing for a hour in third gear is different than plowing in first gear at high rpm's, isn't it as far as wear and tear?

The hour meter just shows hours engine has run but doesn't consider what tractor is doing.

Usually [ usually ], if the hour meter runs just off the 12 volts, it is a straight time period. If the hour meter gets it's input off the alternator, it USUALLY means the time is dependant on the RPM. Idle is not weighted as much as @PTO RPM. My Mahindra 5035 gets its input off the alternator.

Tractor hour meters (everyone I have ever seen) are tied to RPM and are usually set to calculate hours at PTO speed. Simple hour meters like on lawnmowers start when you turn the key. Some will even run for several minutes after the key is turned off. I think the one on my Ferris mower is that way. First use was .6 hours. I cranked it up a couple of times to move it around in my shop and next thing I look and it has 1.0 hours and at most it ran 5 minutes total. I know when I took my flying license, the Hobbs meter which is what they used to charge time (not the RPM hour meter) ran 6 minutes each time you turned on the key.
