Hour Meter Not Functioning

Greetings All - I recently bought a JD 1070 (with FEL and backhoe) which had been well maintained over the years. The hour meter when I bought it in December 2010 had 1007.3 hours on it ... and now after having used it at least 10 hours, it still has 1007.3 hours on it. Any suggestions on where to start to resolve this problem would be appreciated!

Is the tach working? If it is and it works like my tractor, there is something wrong with the hourmeter itself because they work off the same cable coming from the engine and connecting on the back of the cluster. It is a simple cable with the core turning according to the RPM of the engine. It is not electrical.

The tach works fine. It's possible that the core may be binding in the cable.. maybe I'll try some cable lubricant to see if that makes a difference.

I added speedo cable lubricant but still no change in the hour meter after using the tractor for several hours. I have not tried to pull the instrument panel off yet to see if there are loose parts inside... but I'm thinking about it.

I'll bet that the magnetic pickup in the hour meter is malfunctioning.

Could there be corrosion on the cable? The hour meter on my Yanmar 169D (same as JD650) is badly corroded so I got a new one. Still havent replaced it and have kept track of my hours here on TBN but that may be the problem. Here in Oregon it is so wet that moisture will get into wireing where he protective coating has worn off and completly corrode it, this even happend on my Dad's 2005 3720, the wire going to the seat switch corroded and the tractor would not move. With my tractor, I know I will be replacing the cable soon, my fuel guage stopped working a few months ago. I need that to function so I got a true reason to tear into my tractor.
