So, Eddie taking in what we are dicussing here, are you not putting moulding around the island in the kitchen, or were you not going to? Also are you putting a shoe moulding in the room or just baseboards? I would think if you put a shoue moulding in the room (i would) that you would continue that around the island for continuitiy.

I would do just as JF described but am just a DIY'er flunkie, that has just the smallest time as being a helper/tool hauling for a custom cabinet guy. I know enough to think i know more than i do!! Haha.

Eddies keeping it a secret, even he isn't sure what he's talking about.

Some pics might help at this point, at least if you have any "existing" problems in addition to any "future" problems you're trying to mitigate, Eddie.

Maybe fire/backcharge your tile guy for a poor installation? :confused3:

 And yeah, I think I'm aware you did it yourself.

No quarter round. I'm not a fan. I'll use it if a client wants it, but to me, it's something you do to hide the edge of a remodeled floor. I always suggest to my clients that it will look better if I take off the baseboards and install them after the tile is done. It's not that much more work and the results are quite a bit nicer.

for my parents house, I will be done with all the tile before I do any trim. Then the trim will go on top of the tile and give it a very clean look. Once installed, I will paint the trim in place.

None of these questions about the cabinets have anything to do with this project. It was just something I got to wondering about while I was installing the cabinets and tile. How do you guys do it?

Thanks,
Eddie

I guess thats personal preference i personally like the look of shoe moulding and true quarter round is used only when the width is need to hide like you said.

When i tore out and removed the HW in my living room and put hardwood back down i removed base boards and wanted to put shoe moulding, but on one side of a room there was a fireplace removed and walled up years ago. Part of the cement hearth is protruding from under the wall, the proler thing would of been chisels and a sledge to true it back up to the wall so that it would not effect the floor install. But due to the cement i could not run my flooring to within a 1/4 or so of the wall, so i had to stop short of the cement. This allowed the board to be so short that the base would not hide it and even shoe mould would be to short so i had to go with full "true quarter round" in the room to hide this imperfection. Yes the proper way would be to chisel it out, and had this not be my own house and i was fine with the way i did it to save time i did it my way. NOw had i been doing it for someone else i would chisel out what was needed, and give a change order as needed if it was going to take any significant amount of time.

And just in case Eddie is asking how to attach a "free standing" cabinet to a tile floor (and not a cabinet that can be attached to a wall), this is something I've done in the past...

I've used construction adhesive to glue down some 2 x 4's for the cabinet to attach to. Just place your cabinet where you want it and mark its position, then glue (or otherwise attach) your 2 x 4's, let dry, and install your cabinet. Make sure to place your 2 x 4's within the interior dimensions of your cabinet base (with 1/8-1/4" wiggle room), or you'll end up doing a lot of swearing. ;)

And if you've had to shim the cabinet to level it, then add some dreaded shoe mold/end panels/base moulding/toe kick/bubble gum...:D
