Never heard of a pond being a factor for tax assessment. The county assessor would be interested, and departments normally talk to each other.

It will be for me. I'm having a water park with rides and a concession stand!Never heard of a pond being a factor for tax assessment.
That sounds good but isn't always true. Often you will be expected to return things to their original state plus pay a fine, whereas if you do it right there won't be a problem. There is a saying that comes to mind: "It's easier to ask for forgiveness, than permission
Have you considered having a plumber run a camera down with a locator? You could at least map the system, and that might set you up for bringing it to compliance...That sounds good but isn't always true. My father always held your viewpoint. He wanted a flush at the greenhouse but apparently didn't get any permits. (There is a state database with every approved site permit since 1970 or something like that.)
Chances are that he did it right. He knew how to do a septic and my uncle was the plumbing inspector.
Within a few years the property will be sold and a legal septic would enhance the value. Instead it doesn't exist, because he didn't go through proper channels. It may be just a vault that he had pumped occasionally but I haven't been able to find any receipts for that either.
