I have a roll top desk. The roll top would eventually get dry and difficult to operate. True bees wax was the answer. Heat until melted - brush or inject into desired area. It will harden back up and lubricate for many years.
While it's still fluid - just enough will soak into the wood to hold the remainder in place. Many fluid products will totally absorb into the wood and no longer lubricate.
I use carnuba wax since it's pretty hard, but it has to be applied with a little heat (preferably from friction) before assembly. Once it's assembled ??? lots of good ideas on the posts above.
We got a jar of Slideez and it worked great on some antique furniture. The actual ingredients are a trade secret but likely a lot of what has been suggested so far like carnuba wax, etc.
