How best to mark hydraulic hoses

We used what we called "Brady Labels" at the electronics company I worked for. They are cloth tape with numbers printed on them. The problem with then is they will loosen/wear out with time. They are also not easy to see in poor light. I recomended the white tie wraps, 1 on first, 2 on second, etc. as they will last a long time, and are much easier to see in low light conditions. You could even count them by feal in a completly dark area.

Guys,

Go to a hydralics dealer and by the color coded plastic male and female caps.

On my JD 4100, they have yellow, silver, black, and green male and female caps. I know that both of the JD dealers I deal with sell them off the rack. And, to boot, they are after market parts.

Don't think that the twist ties, marker pens, or tape could hold up to the hydralic fluid.

Someone suggested using white tie wraps and changing the number of tie wraps used on each hose.

That's what I did, Mike. I figured when I'm looking at the valve, there are 4 connections and just read numbers in the normal manner (upper left #1, upper right #2, lower left #3, and lower right #4), so I put 1, 2, 3, and 4 white wire ties on the corresponding hoses.

If they're aftermarket purchases, do not buy colors that may be confusing. With the JD colors, I believe that the green would be the most troublesome.

Bird, you say you use "wire ties". Is that the same as what I call "cable ties", the nylon thing-a-ma-bobs that you wrap around a wire (or wires) and then poke the pointed end through the other end which has a sort of ratchet-latch on it? (Boy, they are really difficult to describe in words) /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
I see others in this thread use the term "tie wraps", which to me mean the things I twist around the open end of a plastic bag to hold it closed.

Ken, your "cable ties" are what others call "tie wraps". "Here's a <A target="_blank" HREF=http://tiewraps.com/colortwpage.html> web site </A> with a rainbow of colors to choose from. The only problem is they only come in bags of 1,000. /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif

I call the things used to keep a plastic bag shut "twisties". /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Yep, I don't recall hearing anyone call them anything but wire ties, but now I see you call them cable ties and Mike calls them tie wraps. Now of course we used to have some extra large and strong ones that we called flex cuffs in my previous profession./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
