How BIG is TOO BIG?

/ How BIG is TOO BIG? #21
Im able to take care of 12 acres quite nicely with my JD 790 (30 hp), turf tires, 60" belly mower and the 70 loader. About 6 acres of fields get mowed regularly, I do light loader work, drag away downed trees, grade the driveway, etc.. I've got a lot of trees to mow around, so the tight turning radius and belly mower combo really helps. Some days I wish I hadn't bought the turf tires (when trying to do tougher loader work). Thinking about buying one of those tooth-bars for the loader to add a little more bite.... I could probably use a little more strength on loader work.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with the 790 and am not convinced that I really need more tractor than what I've got now.

Hi,
Isn't a 790 a gear tractor? People keep telling me that I need an HST. Do I for just light work around the 6 acre property?

Paul,
I'm not a big fan of hydrostat because I do more farm work that is really hard on them and with the power reverser I get along really well. Now with that said for most people they are very nice to have. You have an automatic break by letting off of it. No gears to mess with if you aren't familiar with tractor driving, drastically decreases the learning curve, and much easier to handle and get around with the hydro. Do you need it? No. But for the reasons mentioned above and I'm sure some by others, it is a nice feature. Basically just think of it as the difference between a manual and an automatic in a vehicle.

And if it won't, it will be big enough to help you build a really nice barn!!! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Paul,
If your looking at the 4300, I'd suggest taking a hard look at the 4400. 3 more horsepower across the board and not much heavier (only difference is weight of motor). Same physical dimensions. The extra power could come in handy. On the other hand, this,

might be a little big./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I'd really LOVE to drive one of those someday....

Lot of good advice - I have 11 acres and 27 hp - haven't found yet where I needed more so anything around 30hp should more than do the job you're looking at.

All -

Just priced out a 9400T with everything - $230,635.

Now, all I have to do is convince the CFO. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Terry

oh, I forgot to mention two things. It has a CD player and the CFO said - "you can live in it."<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1>Edited by TerryinMD on 11/09/01 01:38 PM (server time).</FONT></P>
