How does a slit seeder overload in a catastrophic manner that might break something? Sounds more like a job for a [small] shear bolt.

Not sure but if you pick up a piece of rebar on the surface of the ground, which is entirely possible, the gearbox is going to blow up unless the clutch slips. Just a guess but I'll bet that gearbox is $1,500 so I figure to protect it. The PTO and clutch are a pretty tight fit package and the clutch is a radial pin style.
