How clean is your garage?

/ How clean is your garage? #21
Your garage is about as well sorted out and organized as well as mine are. I've found it's usually best to keep your out buildings reasonably full (to discourage other people from asking if they can store stuff) and slightly disorganized (to prevent people from asking to borrow things, if they think you can't find it, they don't inquire).

When I was employed, I had a sign posted in my workshop that read as follows:

Please do not let the appearance of the premises mislead you to believe I don't know what I am doing. All items are in a well regulated and systemic state of confusion, and misplaced exactly where I cannot find them.

For these reasons, NO TOOLS LOANED TO ANYONE. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Is this question directed toward me? I posted my garage picture once and it hasn't changed...... well almost... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It is neat and well organized... I can find anything that I want on a moments notice... Even the parking meter. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I try to keep my barn (60 X 80 with a loft in half) as neat as I can. However, with a dozen friends, relatives, and my kids constantly on the prowl, it never stays organized as I like. I'm constantly using the blower on the air compressor hose to blow the dust off of things and out the door with the help of two 4' fans. Heck, I even do that in the loft with a leaf blower. I flat wear out a 48" push broom every year. Anyway, it still looks like like it is in a state of chaos.

About the only things I always keep track of are my tools. I have 3 rolling tool chests that I keep most of my tools in. I know what I put in each drawer from memory. When someone takes a tool and doesn't return it, I notice. However, when it comes to finding that spare dimmer switch, that #15 torx socket that fits on my 3/8" drive etc., I find myself simply driving to Lowes to buy another to save time. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Sometimes I've spent much more time and effort looking for a $3 item than it was worth. I could have replaced it in 15 minutes.

Now my wife has noticed this. This last weekend, she asked my why I have 6 10mm 3/8 sockets. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I just told her that I needed 6 of them! Anyone else know what I mean? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you don't have one you can't get it dirty.

Projects on the horizon:
1) Finish basement
2) Build deck
3) Get a garage built

( I have a four car garage, a 30 x 80 machine shed and a 7500 sq ft barn.

There is just enough room in the machine shed for my shop and to park the tractor, the rest is full of other equipment and last years hay.

The barn is comitted to the horses and associated stuff.

The garage is still full of boxes (full of stuff still) from when we moved almost two years ago.

The cars get parked outside. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For a long time I looked askance a people who had the deluded notion that a garage was for parking cars. My wife finally insisted that 1/2 was hers after I finished the house remodel.

Mine made the same comment once........ I told her that I would be glad to remove her pillow, and blankets to her half. She could also have her dog along with her for additional warmth.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif A mans home is his castle....... women are just the court jesters.... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Got to admit my garage is a cluttered mess ! BUT ,My Storage shed ( 12x 16 is pristine /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Seems like the wife prefers unpacked boxes of heated things that We'll never use . Some day I'll build a pole barn , if for nothing else just to see what will go in there /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif John

What kind of person builds pole barns for a living and doesn't have one for themself? That's kind of like having a tractor dealer and not owning a tractor! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

All I have is the attached two car garage, and it is full. We get one car and one tractor in it, with things stuffed all around them... Just picture Junkman's garage with room to squeeze a car in and out. The tractor comes out too, but I usually have to move a few things first. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Hopefully, my pole barn project will be coming soon... income tax refund is due in less than two weeks! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
