How could Artificial Intelligence become dangerous?

Some one (or more) on this forum has the signature line "Artificial Intelligence will never overcome Natural Stupidity."
I had occasion to purchase a 1"-11.5 NPT tap and knew the square end would be too large for my tap handles; plus the accessibility of the hole in a pump in a pit that I wanted to chase would preclude using a tap handle anyway. My workaround is a square or 8-point socket, appropriate extensions, and a t-handle. I asked Google what size 8-point socket I would need for the 1" tap and was told by Google's AI that, since the tap had a round shaft, I would need a tool to grip the round shaft. Maybe if I ask the question again AI will recommend a basin wrench. For now I am reassured that AI still demonstrates natural stupidity, or at least ignorance.

I often get wrong AI answers, but when I rephrase my question to avoid ambiguities, AI usually gets it right.

Also, when AI gives a wrong answer, tell the AI it is wrong, and why. That will often get it to give you the right answer.

Hertz and AI...
That is a perfect example of why I believe claims that AI is going to eliminate jobs are way overblown. Even if you have AI working, you are still going to have to have people overseeing the process.

In this example, Hertz is not going to be able to get away with fully automating this process (at least not for very long) because as the word gets out on this type of thing, they are going to start losing business. They are going to have to modify their process to bring humans back into it or pay the price.

But AI in the near term will make a person as efficient as four, eliminating three jobs. Tell those sorry folks how AI won't replace "everyone". They likely won't care about symantics

Ah, but Bruce had the knowledge to know the answer was wrong and the wisdom of Socrates to pose questions until AI provided an answer Bruce would accept as being consistent with his experience. Those of us who query AI out of ignorance should have a healthy dose of skepticism.

P.S. AI did finally come up with 21mm or 7/8". My experience leads me to believe that different makers may have different sized squares and that 8-point sockets will work with considerable slop, so I left it there.

AI=Artificial Inanity, Idiocy, Ineptitude, Inability, - and so on. Many of us, including yours truly, never knew technology would turn out to be used against us like it is, in obvious and in sneaky ways.

I recently had my first experience with unexpected AI in place of a clerk. I phoned a small lawn-sprinkler install/repair service and AI asked some routine questions instead of the conversation with a clerk that I expected. That ended with 'Now I'll transfer you to Lucille'. A real person who had all the information on her screen to intelligently, and quickly, discuss alternatives for what I needed and dispatch the tech, that same day.

When the guy arrived he said this was one of several small businesses he has started. His business plan is build up clientele using mostly AI for a dispatch office then sell the going business and start another. Because his real objective was he could make a lot more money developing and selling small owner-operated businesses that couldn't exist without local labor - like this lawn sprinkler repair service.

I wouldn't be surprised if while Lucille is a real person, she might be in another city serving as dispatcher for many small businesses. There's your 4:1 efficiency. In this case maybe 10:1.

May you live in interesting times. ...
