Update -- since this discussion, my guards (or lack of) have been on my mind. Today I fixed the guard on my finish mower shaft. I mowed for 5 hours and have decided I DO NOT like the guard not spinning. IMO it masks the danger a little too much. Granted, I'm used to seeing it spin, but the lack of the visual flash/spin tends keep my attention away from it, and therefore, the danger. I have a 5' deck spinning 3 blades and a shaft, and NOTHING is moving visually. A deaf person ( or wearing headphones) wouldn't know it was running. Every man is different, but I like the guard spinning. It keeps my attention. The stickers on the black plastic make a good flash when it spins. After years of running it with it spinning, it keeps my attention. After 5 hours of it being stationary, it doesn't. I don't like it... It felt more dangerous.
I can't believe it's been 14 hours and no one has called me crazy for thinking such a thing. (not that it'll change my opinion any)
I figured the floodgates of opinion would open.
