I was quite an industrious kid while I was still in school. I did ANYTHING that would earn money. The first summer I was out of school, I was bit by the "I want land" bug. Dad was in the niddle of buying out a business from a friend of his. This friend mentioned that he was wanting to sell his 90 acre "mini-farm" as he called it. I had enough for most of the down payment, and dad floated me a loan for the rest. I spent the next 25 years scrounging for money to pay for it AND raise a family. The farm provided a safe haven for our kids, and a small income to compliment the incomes from our regular jobs. Last year, I decided to scale back. My wife and I spent 30+ years working like two dogs, and just wanted more free time together. My son bought the place from me. (He wanted his kids to grow up on the same piece of earth he did.) We bought a smaller place (45 acres)
If there's any "youngins'" looking in, make that plunge as soon as you can. It's easier to deal with being deep in debt at a young age than at an older one. Get your home, get it paid off, and enjoy life. (although I don't like the idea of debt, it's about the only way most of us can ever have much)
