How did you become a land owner?

Bought it repo'd from the bank, hauled momma and the baby out there from big 'ol Hattiesburg, MS. Built her a house and had another baby. 38 greatest acres in the world, but I AM slightly biased. Wish I was there now.

I was quite an industrious kid while I was still in school. I did ANYTHING that would earn money. The first summer I was out of school, I was bit by the "I want land" bug. Dad was in the niddle of buying out a business from a friend of his. This friend mentioned that he was wanting to sell his 90 acre "mini-farm" as he called it. I had enough for most of the down payment, and dad floated me a loan for the rest. I spent the next 25 years scrounging for money to pay for it AND raise a family. The farm provided a safe haven for our kids, and a small income to compliment the incomes from our regular jobs. Last year, I decided to scale back. My wife and I spent 30+ years working like two dogs, and just wanted more free time together. My son bought the place from me. (He wanted his kids to grow up on the same piece of earth he did.) We bought a smaller place (45 acres)

If there's any "youngins'" looking in, make that plunge as soon as you can. It's easier to deal with being deep in debt at a young age than at an older one. Get your home, get it paid off, and enjoy life. (although I don't like the idea of debt, it's about the only way most of us can ever have much)

After years of living in a suburb and riding my motorcycles several counties away where it was pretty with hills, trees, and space, I realized we could live there. Looked for about six months and made offers on two places before we got one we wanted.

When I retired from federal government service, I sold my urban home, and bought 30 acres with a double wide home, and a 17 acre site with a single wide mobile home on it. I use one to live in and the 17 acre site is a getaway deer hunting spot, although I get plenty from my back yard. I live so far from civilization I have to drive to the next county to get my grandson a McDonalds happy meal. The other day seven cars drove passed my house. It means I have to look for a quieter place.

Purchased my 32 acres after looking for about a year and a half. I own 10% and the bank owns 90%, but I can't even get the bank to come out and mow 1%. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
