How Do I check to see if Trailer brake ontroller is working?

I figured it out today and the issue is in the trailer, I used a volt meter and a test light and everything on the truck side is working as it should and with the test light the controller also lit up. The Controller needs resistance to light up.


Now I need to figure out how to wire the trailer up correctly.

Start at etrailer.com. have wiring diagrams and pinouts along with just about any part you could need for your trailer. Pretty fair prices and I believe free shipping for spending $99 or more. Also videos with full script of what was said on vid. Best of luck with the project.

How does the following plan sound,
I'll get the Brake kit and the junction box linked to below.
I'll run 10 Ga blue wire to the brakes along with white ground or get a duplex wire in a jacket but I won't run across trailer from brake to brake I'll do a home run to junction box from each side.

I'll then use a 14 gauge duplex jacketed wire and run to each tail light and then a single wire to each marker, I believe the lights are all self grounding. I gues I'll need to run a ground from junction to trailer as well. I think running home runs will eliminate a few splices.

Good plan. Pick yourself up a can of liquid electrical tape. Will seal any connection you need to make. Also solder any light connection instead of using crimps. Did my trailer that way and haven't had a bad connection problem yet!(knock on wood) The junction box makes hook up and diagnosis a breeze, home runs whenever possible. Little bit a planning sure helps with the final details.

Pay attention to GOOD GROUND. 90% of my trailer problems were traced to faulty ground. Sometimes they make connection, sometimes not. Can be very frustrating. I had one 7 pole plug where the ground inside the enclosed plug was bad. When you pushed the plug in it would make connection. Go down the road a mile it would stop working.

A few months ago I rewired my neighbor's trailer. I couldn't believe the factory ran wiring harness through holes drilled through the frame! As mentioned I soldered all connections, used wire loom then taped it. I used rubber grommet if it went through a hole. Used lots of zip ties.
Any splice soldered and triple heat shrink. They relied on ball for ground (someone already mentioned ground). I ran a separate ground trailer to truck frame, soldered ring terminals, 10ga., toothed washers on sanded surface, painted when finished.
I guess the factory wanted to save $15 and an extra few hours work.

there is also a special waterproof heat shrink, has a silicon layer or something on the inside, used it for solar connections on our caravan and yacht.
