How do I convert a 6 volt 960 to a 12 volt with an electronic ignition

My 960 is left at the farm where there is no power and might get started and used 2 times a year. For simplicity and reliability I want to convert the starting system vs having to mess wit hit every other time I want to use it. It currently has 6 volt system, a generator and points. I can easily convert it to 12V negative ground with an alternator to charge the battery and crank the starter motor although I loose the tachometer drive which comes from the generator. My question is what do I need to purchase to go to a 12 volt electronic ignition system after I make the conversion. thanks.

If you really have a 960 the tach drive if off the hydraulic pump. Tach drive from the generator was a feature of the Thousand Series.

RickB is correct, if you have a 1953-1964 Ford your tach is driven off the back end of the hydraulic pump.
I like 12V and I like EI.
However, I suggest you do the conversions seperately. Do the 12V first. Use a coil that is designed for a full 12V like the Napa #IC14 or the coil sold by/for the EI manufacturer. Eliminate the original step down resister in the circuit. Get the bugs worked out of it so it starts, runs and charges the battery correctly. THEN do the EI conversion. Putting EI in it is very simple. I put EI in a 3 cylinder Ford tractor and know for a fact the distributer cap did not need to come off for 14 years. EI is particularly well suited for tractors stored in damp sheds or those that sit outside and for tractors that do not get run frequently.
You can get the Pertronix EI kit at many places. I buy most of my parts from the folks below.
Make sure you buy the 12V kit not the 6V one. They have both there.
