How do I fix this - Rounded out holes

Hi Moss, I was saying to make the hole big enough for the bushing with a plasma cutter and then weld the bushing in place filling in where necessary. I would trust that more than welding the new tab on. My welds have never failed but I am always worrying about them.

Ken

Gotcha! If you have access to a plasma cutter that would work, I guess. But if you're going to go through the trouble of plasma cutting a hole, grinding, fitting a bushing, welding the bushing, etc..., why not just cut off the tabs and weld new ones on? Trying to stay away from the tank?

How would you plasma cut the lower tab? Or is the lower tab not damaged?

For bushings, was it you I was having discussions with about the bushings in the blades and using DOM tubing VS iron pipe? Anyhow, On Line Metals has small quantities of DOM tubing. Just put a flat ended end mill the size of a bushing in a drill press and plunge it through. Drills walk, flat ended end mills don't walk if you go down gently and in small increments. A drill press will plunge them just fine.

He's gonna have trouble getting a drill press into that location on the tractor.

I thought he had it off the tractor. You would know better than me - you have one of those PTs.

Tack a 1/4" plate with proper sized hole over elongated hole/tractor piece.

Use a hole saw with an air drill-the 1/4" plate will act as a guide and prevent the drill from walking.

Remove 1/4" plate when done drilling.

Insert bushing

Thinking about this some more, what I would do is make a piece shaped like the worn out hole. Wouldn't be that hard with a cutting torch and bench grinder. Drill a hole in it for the bolt. Chamfer the edges and weld it in. You could trace the hole shape on a piece of cardboard with a pencil.

Moss, I would just use an actual steel bushing.

Carl, the parts list says those are 3/4" pins

Is the bushing going to accomplish anything other than just keeping the hole round? Since it wore out, would it be prudent to put thicker tabs and a longer bolt on there? Just wondering out loud. I'll be checking mine a little more thoroughly from now on.

I would just buy a couple of Williams washers and weld on the out side of the tabs. Williams Washer

The bushing should be a lot harder with a lot more wear resistance than the original steel. I wouldn't put a soft bushing in.
