cp1969,
I hear ya'. Truth is you never do. But I found a neat windows program I use called Bounce Spam Mail. It requires a proactive approach to using it, in that it requires some cutting and pasting of mail headers, but what it does is send back a 'no such address' to the mailer. It is a method to fake-out the spammers. They will drop you off their lists when they think your email address is bogus. Nice little tool. Here is a link to download the file. BSM18.ZIP. I understand the author no longer supports it, but works for me on windows 98. Also, never reply or click the link provided by spammers to be automatically removed from their list. They are not legally bound to honor your request, and doing so just tells them you are still there. It's an ongoing battle /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif.
