I agree on the lookers/posters ratio. I am impressed that most of the solutions use stuff that might be lying around. I could always run to a store or shop and spend money and time, but free & fast bootleg solutions are often the best.

So now I find my upper link turnbuckle has buggered threads. I unscrewed it with difficulty, but can't get more than eight turns in. I loaned out my wire wheel, so I'll visit my mechanic friend who might have a tap... not likely because it's the reverse thread end. All fun.

How big is the thread? It can be cleaned with a needle file if you have eyes for it and patience.

The external thread looks ok, except for the tip, which is rounded off. Since I get eight full turns before resistance goes way up, that doesn't seem the problem. It can't possibily be cross threaded. I tried back and forth, but that didn't help. Strange, that it came apart with only moderate force.

Have a pipe vice, didn't want the scars. Went whole hog at the mechanic's and lost. The internal threads were too buggered. Bought replacement from Hoye, price very reasonable, I needed other parts anyway. It will be a swap job. Thanks all.
