How do I kill these weeds in my fields???

My horse fields are being over run with a farily small purple flowered weed. I put Pasture Pro down on one field about 3 weeks ago, but they're still there, so they are probably not a broadleaf weed. Here in N Va, they are all over the roadbanks. I cannot determine the exact name of this weed (I have searched and searched and searched). Those of you in Northern Virgina will probably know the weed I'm talking about. Any suggestions on what to put on my horse fields to get rid of this stuff would be helpful.

What concentration did you use? I use Pasture Pro and I used to apply a lighter mixture. I just had to do it more often. Now I generally use 3 pints to the acre and get a good kill rate. I've also switched to Grazon P+D for my first application in the spring. It lasts a lot longer and doesn't have any more grazing restrictions than PP. You also need to fertilize and watch the PH of your paddock. Make the grass happy and you'll have very few weeds.

JD, Its probably henbit, If you own a spray rig of some kind you can use speedzone or prosecutor ,prosecutor pro etc..to kill all weeds (not grass) the spray stuff works better IMO for this type of problem...

more $$$ but how bad do you want it gone!!

If you want it gone now use the spray method, if you can wait till spring bushog then use dimension (granular ,then weed and feed 6 weeks later)

When I bought our current property it was covered in henbit, I just bushogged it several times and then started to mow it and it was gone for the most part especially after over seeding with grass seed... Good luck...

So I guess with horses you can't use the aforementioned methods.... Sorry , Maybe this info will help somebody?? But anyhow ,Its sounds like Henbit...

Edit: FWJ allways has sage advice and it won't pollute the bay..

It isnt henbit, still looking to try and identify it. Will check out Grazon.

Your best bet would be to contact your County Extension Agent. He/she can identify and give you proven recommendation of treatments that will work.
