Success is MINE!!!
Well, gentlemen, I am pleased to say that I pulled the darn thing off. Here's how: fortunately there was enough excess mounting plate (3/8" steel, or thereabouts), to drill 3 half-inch holes around the edge. Through these I passed 1/2" threaded rod and put the far end on the PTO housing. I turned nuts and washers up against the pump mounting plate, then turned them with a wrench. Lo, and the angles sang....one little snap (thank God it wasn't my threaded rod punching through the PTO housing!), then many more turns and she came off. Inside shows the rust encasing I'd expected.
Still need to liberate the pump from the coupling, but that should be a piece of cake by comparison. For now, I will just bask in the glory of this small success....Thanks for all the encouragement!!!
