I have an old Long backhoe that I am trying to remove hydraulic units for rebuilding. I am having problems with two units where I am unable to remove the pin holding the unit to a hinge. The first photo shows the pin from the outside, the second from the reverse side. I can see nothing that is holding the pin, other than it possibly being a tapered pin. Any suggestions on how to remove this pin?

Is that the safety lock??....maybe access from other side....tap on it and see how it reacts...

Looks like a tapered retainer to me....measure both sides to see if so....if all else fails at least you have room to torch off pins and make new ones.....:)

I agree. Looks like a tapered retaining pin. Appears to have been beat in from the outside and it was probably a press fit. Just get a bigger hammer, a punch similar in size to the pin, a solid surface and start whaling from the back side. Worst you can do is break it.

The problem is that I can not get to the other side with a hammer and punch with any force, without removing additional items that I'm not sure how to remove. The bolt with the nut removed was my attempt to remove the hinge unit but that seems to be screwed in from the other side. Note the screw type head below the one with the nut removed above.

Any chance it could be drilled, tapped and then turned to help loosen it up???

And maybe a slide hammer after drilling and tapping.

Could a bolt be welded to pin, then slide hammer or equivalent be brought to bear?

Just drill and tap to maybe a 3/8 or 7/16 , get a piece of thick flat stock with a hole in the center for the bolt , put bolt through the flat plate and thread it into the tapped hole and tighten .

If there is no obvious retainer clip on the inside then I would just torch the pin on both sides and get it out where you can work on it. It seems like those pins never come out without a torch. You then can use a hydraulic press to get the small pin out and replace your big pin. The pivot pin is probably wore a lot from use any way. You may try drilling out the pin but it is probably harden steel that you can not cut. Good luck.
