How do you get a nice lawn? Think Spring

After completing the build of our home, we just threw down some grass seed. Grass did grow but also a bunch of weeds. The area get full sun but, the soil is pretty bad. In fact much of it is crushed sand stone that was removed from the basement. During the summer it's all green but when fall comes and all the weedy stuff dies back it gets thin. So this Spring I want to get serious.

I would prefer not to just kill it all and start over, it's sloping and near a lake. Do I over seed and a month later apply a weed and feed? The area is only 120 feet by 120 feet.

Buy a load of top soil, otherwise you will chase your tail forever...... I know....I 've done it. It's first about the soil, then water, then ph, seed, food, herbicide... I avoid herbicide and just go by ph. with lime . I am always acidic- so I add lime for weedcontrol. Coarse shale with thin topsoil and rapid drainage ....way different from you
