How do you get rid of bats?

As I understand it bats can be a carrier of rabies. it can be in their droppings and gets into the air. also they can bite without you noticing it. So please be very careful

Fortunately you are incorrect about the droppings. Here's a quote from the CDC...“People cannot get rabies just from seeing a bat in an attic, in a cave, or at a distance. In addition, people cannot get rabies from having contact with bat guano (feces), blood, or urine, or from touching a bat on its fur (even though bats should never be handled!).”

I appreciate everyones interest in this. I have learned a whole lot from the posts and links to some really good sites. I just need to relocate some bats! This week I plan to either build a bat house or buy one and hope that the bats will relocate.

How close should I put what I hope to be the bats new home to my building?

If you have an area that breeds mosquitoes, then place the bat house in close proximity to that area. If it is a large area, then place two bat houses at opposite ends of your outdoor living space to help create a mosquito free area..... well almost mosquito free. If you want to be totally mosquito free, consider a "mosquito magnet"..........

I heard that the mosquito magnet kills a lot of other "harmless" or useful bugs... true?
I'm surrounded by water (essentially) and have lots of bats. We started seeing 'em around early april (no bat !) and don't have a lot of mosquitos considering the water around us... could these things be linked?

Also, anyone know if this is a banner year for TICKS? (at least in the NE)???

Every year is a banner year for ticks. I use Frontline Plus for fleas and ticks and it works great. Be careful that you don't get sold on the regular Frontline, which doesn't work as well.
